A Web Analytics Contest?
Jan 13th, 2007  by Jennifer LeClaire

ClickTale launched a web analytics contest last Thursday. In essence, ClickTale is looking opening up a virtual suggestion box, looking for input from people about what they type of information they want to know about their web visitors.

“Specifically, imagine you could track thousands of visitors and millions of page events. How would you aggregate this information? What kind of statistics would be useful to you? What types of reports or visual maps would you like to see?” ClickTale writes on its blog.

ClickTale is going to pick the best ideas and work with the winners to make their dreams become a reality. The winners get a free VIP beta account and access to special custom-made reports.

This is pretty clever and I’m sure ClickTale will turn up some interesting suggestions. The question is whether or not the company will be able to provide answers in the form of analytics solutions to match.

Let’s face it, web analytics is getting more powerful all the time, but there are still limitations to what we can learn through this tool today. I’ll be keeping my eye on this contest to see what ClickTale comes up with. It’s a great marketing gimmick. Not sure if it will turn out to be anything more than that.

Sure, it may lead ClickTale to offer some new features it didn’t have before. But will it lead ClickTale to offer some new features that no one else has? Time will tell.

Thanks for the blog post. Just one correction, ClickTale already has features that no other web analytics has. Today, we record users browsing sessions and play them back as movies. That means website owners can see every mouse movement, every click, every keystroke and every scroll. We also have unique and informative reports, however, as you correctly stated, why not let our customers tell us what they want to see. We are here to serve and hope to make the web a better place.
