I was just in Boston and Chicago teaching a Web Analytics Association Boot Camp and extolling the virtues of the WAA standards committee in both classes. “We desperately need more industry standards,” I told the class. “And the WAA is making great progress.”

Lo and behold, even as I was speaking, WAA Standards Committee Co-chairs Jason Burby and Angie Brown announced the publishing of standard definitions for 26 foundational web analytic metrics covering the areas of visits, content and conversion. This is the result of a collaborative effort between members including vendors, agencies, practitioners and thought leaders. The new definitions provide consistency of the most widely used terms across the analytics industry.

I join with Eric Peterson in congratulating the WAA. Eric also offers some good explanations that are definitely worth a read. Click here to see for yourself.

Click here to check out the new standard definitions. I believe this will help eliminate some of the confusion in the industry, help raise awareness, and pave the way for greater adoption as this pivotal technology heads for the mainstream.
